Last Kiss

A few weeks ago I first heard Bob Ricci’s “Ode to Playboy”, and I really liked the song. It sounded familiar, so I looked to find more information about it and found it was a parody of “Last Kiss”. So I downloaded a copy by Pearl Jam, which I later found out was a cover of the original by Ricky Nelson.

The version by Pearl Jam, however, still sounded eerily familiar. After some thinking I think I have finally figured out why: it was used as the theme music for an epsiode of a TV show. It is likely that the show I remember it from was “Cold Case” or “Without a Trace”, but I haven’t been able to find any information linking the song to any TV show episode. (And I am hoping that someone out there remembers the show and can give me some more details.)

In a slightly related note, the only other song that I remember from an episode was “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)”. It was the theme from the “Without a Trace” holiday episode where Jack decided to stop fighting with his wife over custody of their daughters. A very poignant message in song.

The Road from Tiger: iSync

Along with many other people, I was standing in line on Friday to try out the new version of the operating system from Apple. Now, after a clean disk install, I am trying to get back to speed with everything, installing all of those needed applications. Thi sis my journey.

Until I get the introduction ready to go, word of complaint about iSync that even the help site will not tell you: you enable Palm syncing for a device, you must be logged in as an administrator. iSync will not ask you for authentication, it will just silently fail.

Since part of the directions insist that you have already synced your data once, this required that you log on as an admin, sync data (hopefully the admin’s PDA), then enable iSync, all so a user can sync a PDA. Hopefully Apple or Palm will fix this madness soon.

Making Sense of Life

I sense you
I hear you in the rustling autumn leaves blown by the wind
I see you in the clouds above us on a warm summer day
I feel you in the heat of a camp fire nestled deep in the woods
I taste you in the satly sea air if a moonlit walk on the beach
I smell you in the fluffy towels pulled straight from the dryer

You help me make sense of it all

I will be there for you
I will hold on to you no matter where the winds of life take us
I will sacrifice all that is needed to fill our relationship with sunshine
I will love you as we continually kindle the fire between us
I will learn from you as your companion on the road to forever
I will cherish you as we spend our daily lives with each other

As we make sense out of life.
Together.
Forever.

Microsoft Excel Filenames

Can anyone “out there” explain to me why, in the Microsoft Windows version, in Microsoft Excel 2002 (version 10 of this product), file names which conform to the OS standard are not supported?

Besides all of the other characters you can’t use in filenames, Excel will not work properly if your filename includes brackets. It will open the files just fine, and will let most functions work properly, but you can’t do a Save As… to that same filename in a different directory.

Go figure.

Informed Decisions

According to a recent news story in Florida, a young girl is being denied an abortion by the state because she is “not able to make an informed decision because of her age and immaturity”. She’s thirteen, pregnant and living in a shelter for abused and neglected teens, without knowing her complete history, this may be one of the best decisions she’s made in a while. Or maybe, just a way to try to put the past behind her and start trying to live again.

Service with a Smile

On the way to work yesterday I saw a truck from Soucy’s Sewer Service with a motto on the back: “Go with the Flow”.

What an excellent idea.

Always or Never?

I stopped at the grocery store on the way home today and picked up three items:

  • A bag of shredded cheese
  • A bottle of wine
  • A Butterfinger Crisp

Along with my receipt I got back a buy one get one free coupon for Always Pads. Are they trying to tell me something?
