Using a Series 1 TiVo without Service
If you have a Series 1 TiVo (like my Sony SVR-2000) that was manufactured before October 2001, you can use it without paying for service. (The “official” thread on tivocommunity.com has a good deal of information, but can be difficult to find. It took me about six months. I’m just reiterating these this information here in hopes that it can be easier for people to find in the future.)
To actually use this free service, you have to make sure that your TiVo is enabled for it. There are two method to make this happen:
- Call TiVo Customer service (877-367-8486) and indicate that you need help through internal service code 14-29-02.
- Log-on to tivocommunity.com and send a PM to TivoJerry with your TSN.
Good luck.

My City Daily
Recently, I have been sending quite a few posts to My City Daily. (The one from last Friday was even published today.) I like sending in comments there–it fits my style. Short, sweet and to the point. I’ve always planned on doing longer articles on this site, but they never seem to make it. After thinking through all of the things I want to write, I’ve lost the drive.
So, short it is. And if you do a Goolgle search for mycitydaily, I’m on the front page. Cool.
Now I’m just waiting on those free lunch coupons.

What did you expect them to do?
Response to the Consumerist post on AIG Has Already Used Up 3/4 Of $123 Billion Bailiout.
Can someone explain why this is an issue? What exactly were you expecting AIG to do with the loan? Save it for a rainy day. Its pouring buckets and if they had enough money, they wouldn’t have needed the loan to begin with.
Last week the news was reporting concern that the banks that were bailed out would just sit on the bailout money. we can’t have it both ways.

Consider it a Gift
Response to the Consumerist post on Please, Citibank, Stop Sending Us Random Amounts Of Money!.
Ask them to convert the checks to some sort of merchandise so that is falls under the USPS Rules for Unsolicited Merchandise. It may fall under that category anyway. (Check with your local postmaster.)

Policing the House
Question: Would you rent a drug-sniffing dog to search your teen’s bedroom?
If you are hiring dogs to search your child’s bedroom, then you have bigger issues that possible drug use to work through. But if you insist, make sure you have your lawyer hire the service so you will be covered by attorney/client privilege when the business records are subpoenaed.
MyCityDaily opinion poll response for today.

Stealth Changes in Wordpress 2.6.3
The release notes for Wordpress 2.6.3 indicate just two files changed, but the svn update shows a different story:
[grant]$ cd wordpress-install/ [grant]$ svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.6.3 U wp-includes/class-snoopy.php U wp-includes/version.php U wp-admin/includes/media.php Updated to revision 9318. [grant]$
This is not good as the release notes indicate an incorrect procedure for update–leading to the possibility of two different version 2.6.3 out there. (The changes to media.php can be see in trac.)

Convenience Checks
On a Consumerist post, downwithmonstercable replies:
I get offers in the mail all the time to use “convenience checks” for my cards that give me a 4.99% rate or something. I don’t get it though. How is writing a check more convenient than a card?
That sounds kinda like a Jack Handey deep thought. Except way lamer.
I can’t figure out if he’s a clueless idiot or a clever troll. I’m guessing clever troll. I mean, if you don’t know why you would use the convenience checks that came in the mail, how about you read the advertisement that came with them?
