Kris Kristofferson vs. Gary Busey
Every time I hear Kris Kristofferson introduce 8th of November, I get a picture in my head of Gary Busey (as he appeared in the short film “Get Out of My Dreams and Also Out of My Car: A Guide to Your Restraining Order” in an episode of the Simpsons’, with the rambling: “Now Joe can’t come within 500 feet of Mary. He also can’t call her, or burn his name in gas on her lawn. I’m gonna let you in on a little secret, Joe is me. And Mary is a composite of 12 different women and a small independent film company all of whom couldn’t deal with me because I’m too real.”)
What does it all mean? Hopefully nothing. I can’t stand that real.

Junk On the Tube
What you gonna do with the junk in your trunk?
I’m gonna get you drunk…
…and make you advertise for Verizon! Couldn’t they use something better than date rape to advertise their services?

Nick Stokes Gets Lucky
During the final CSI episode last year, Nick Stokes was heard singing Bob Neuwirth’s Lucky Too:
My friends get all my money — may they always have enough
To my enemies I leave my luck — only maybe not quite so tough
The dealers get my “bones” — may they keep ‘em on a roll
The Devil’s had my body, now may the Good Lord take my soul
So do not try to find me, for I will not be found.
Powerful lyrics. Quentin Tarantino at his best.

Payback, Karma and Football
Ha ha, the Steelers lost. The Steelers had won something like 16 consecutive regular-season games. Looks like the Black & Gold won’t be breaking the 20 game streak by the Patriots’, which was stopped last year by the Steelers.

In a Fix : Sponsored Television
One of the television shows that I still watch regularly is TLC’s In a Fix. In the recent “Desert Dreams” episode, they deviated from their standard “You’re going away for three days at [expensive hotel] for rest and relaxation…” in favor of “And the details of your getaway can be found in this Expedia envelope…”
It’s not that I mind product placement in television shows (it could be the wave of the future), but you have to make a it just a little less obvious. Perhaps they should just stick to one of the cast members going to the hardware store each episode so that they can get their Discover Card swiped. (And who is allowing these cast members to use J. A. Webb’s Discover Card anyway?)

A Grand Plan
The more that I write in the log, the more I realize that the only way that entries get written is if I actually sit down and write them. There are many entries that have been started and just not finished. Most of that is due to the grand plans that I lay out and then just never get the chance to complete. Perhaps the more important part is to just get all of the ideas out and make it known and finish the elephant one post at a time.
That being said, Without a Trace is one of the greatest shows on television today. My acknowledgment of this came only recently, but started early in the first season with the episode In Extremis. After watching this episode of the first season, I swore that I was never going to watch it again. And I didn’t for the rest of that season. (We picked it up again in the summer re-runs doldrums last summer and have continued through till now.)
Why did we go back to watching the show? I realized that I disliked the show for the wrong reason: it was too good. The episode was very powerful (TV Tome readers put it in the top 20% overall) and that scared me. How good does something have to be before you say: “That was just too good”?

American Idle: In High Gear
With the season winding down, my picks for American Idle this year are not actually doing that bad. (I picked who i thought the top four were, and two of those make up the final four on the show. The bottom two for this week would definitely have to be Carrie and Vonzell, though I won’t make a pick for the best of the week. Hopefully Anthony will be helped by the Vote for the Worst campagin, since it did so much for FA FU.
The one memorable moment from tonight’s show was when big Randy Jackson was choking back tears after Anthony Federov finished singing “I’m Already There”.

Last Kiss
A few weeks ago I first heard Bob Ricci’s “Ode to Playboy”, and I really liked the song. It sounded familiar, so I looked to find more information about it and found it was a parody of “Last Kiss”. So I downloaded a copy by Pearl Jam, which I later found out was a cover of the original by Ricky Nelson.
The version by Pearl Jam, however, still sounded eerily familiar. After some thinking I think I have finally figured out why: it was used as the theme music for an epsiode of a TV show. It is likely that the show I remember it from was “Cold Case” or “Without a Trace”, but I haven’t been able to find any information linking the song to any TV show episode. (And I am hoping that someone out there remembers the show and can give me some more details.)
In a slightly related note, the only other song that I remember from an episode was “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)”. It was the theme from the “Without a Trace” holiday episode where Jack decided to stop fighting with his wife over custody of their daughters. A very poignant message in song.

Idle on Broadway
Musings on this weeks American Idol, a collection of songs from old Broadway musicials.
- The vocal performance of Scott Savol on The Impossible Dream (The Man of LaMancha) is probably the only thing I’ll call thin about him.
- Imagine Nikko Smith singing Ole Man River (Showboat). Or, perhaps he would be better suited to Ya Got Trouble (Music Man).
- Anthony Federov sings Climb Every [Disco] Mountain (Sound of Music).
So who would I send home this week? Scott Savol. With Anthony Federov and Bo Bice in the bottom three with him.
