Installing Leopard on Letterbox

October 14th, 2008 | Tags: , , ,

After several mis-steps, I finally got Leopard installed on Letterbox (the iBook G4). Since it misses the cutoff for requirements, I turned to the [OpenFirmware trick][1] on [LowEndMac][1b]. Before trying to install, boot into open firmware and enter:

dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0
d# 867000000 encode-int ” clock-frequency” property
boot cd:,\\:tbxi

This will convince the computer that it actually has an 867Mhz processor instead of an 800Mhz processor. Then it boots from the CD and the Installer is happy.

And after I did all that, I found out about the [LeopardAssist][2] tool, which does pretty much the same thing, but without all the typing.
