What They Meant to Say

After ordering our new cell phones from Lets Talk, they sent an email which said:

If you have ordered an activated phone, please check to make sure the cell phone number assigned is local to your service area. If not, call us immediately and we’ll help you get another number.

By help they mean they will give you the actual instructions for getting a different number:

  • Wait until you received the phones
  • Call (or visit a local store for) your carrier and change the phone number yourself
  • Call our customer support so we can update our records.

Actually, no. I have some experience with this. THEY need to be the ones to initiate the number change with the carrier. If you go to a store to change the number, what happens is that the new number doesn’t get marked as a Letstalk-acquired order. LetsTalk, like Wirefly and all the other indirect dealers, get paid on commission. You drop the phone number they assigned to you = they don’t get credit for the sale. And they just sent you a brand new phone for less than their cost. Bad for them.

    p.s. the new AT&T RAZR2 rocks!

Either way, it doesn’t matter, because according to at AT&T rep I talked to, all phone numbers on a FamilyTalk plan must be in the same market. (And I was trying to change a 317 area code into one that was for 270.)
