> Today, I was chastised by the CEO in the middle of a management meeting for showing up late to work every day, despite being in my office before 9:00am every morning. It was my 5th day on the job and no one had bothered to tell me that the office opens at 8:00am, and not 9:00am. [FML][1]

I can have a little bit of sympathy here. On my first day of my job out of college I was late to work. Apparently I was supposed to coordinate with the HR representative to let them know I was moving 1000 miles to take this job. (I figured they would know, since they hired the real estate rep and paid for a housing trip.) But I didn’t, so the day before I was supposed to start they finally over-nighted me my start-day package–to my old address. Wonderful start.

Yeah, but who doesn’t ask what time work starts on their first day??

> Today, I found some charges on my credit card for two round trip tickets to Las Vegas. Turns out my daughter and her stoner, unemployed boyfriend stole my credit card and flew to Vegas over the weekend to get married. I paid for my daughter’s elopement. [FML][1]

Which is why you call your credit card company to report the fraudulent charges and then let them call the police. Or, you can just complain about it.

> Today, my girlfriend decided to break up with me because she found a bra in my cupboard. It was hers. [FML][1]

Maybe she would have stayed if you could explain why you were keeping _her_ bra in _your_ cupboard.

> Today, my mom was criticizing how I can’t handle taking care of any living thing because I’m too irresponsible. We had a huge argument so I went back to my apartment, only to find that my fish had died. I forgot I had a fish. [FML][1]

Many people on [F My Life][1] are just [unclear on the concept][2]:

> Today, I played with a boomerang my first time. I didn’t believe that when you threw it, it comes right back to you. It flew back all right. And broke my nose.

[F My Life][0] has a nice [story about a babysitter][1]:

> Today, I went to babysit eight kids under the age of ten, all by myself. After five hours of Hell, the parents finally came back from the ASU game. I got paid $5. FML

It seems to be a common thing, all pointing to the lesson that you discuss the wage **before** you take the job. If not, you deserved it.

I had always been throughly confused as when to use `i.e.` and when to use `e.g.`—until I read [this article][1]:

* `i.e.` means “this one”
* `e.g.` means “for example”

And `etc.` is never appropriate to use with either one.

In light of [stories like this][1], can anyone tell me why we still have CAPS LOCK keys on our keyboards? How often is it actually used?

In yesterday’s issue of [My City Daily][0], they had a poll question about Octomom:

> “Octomom” Nadya Suleman has recently signed agreements for each of her 14
children to star in a reality television show. Filming is scheduled to
begin September 1st. Each child will earn $250 a day,
collectively earning approximately $250,000 over a 3-year period.
>
> Do you think a reality TV show is an appropriate way for “octomom” to
support her children?

She has managed to get this job for her kids which works out to about 72 days working over three years, or 24 days per year, less
than one day per fortnight. Is that the best she could do? Would you even want to watch a show where each episode had a maximum shooting time of 2 days? (And that’s for a short season!)

(Of note: Octomom is a really cool nickname.)
