The Beginning : How We Met

Monica: Long, long ago in a land far, far away… Okay, so it was really Halloween 1999 in Louisville. Randy and I had both been invited to Halloween parties at the home of John and Brita. Yes, parties. Randy was a guest of the party being co-hosted by Angie and I was the guest of John and Brita’s gathering. Of course guests will intermingle in such a setting and soon Christy and Felisa spied a matchmaking opportunity. They had their work cut out for them as neither Randy nor I were looking to meet anyone that night. But they perservered, maneuvering us around the room to stay in one another’s line of vision.
Randy: I think they were doing all of the moving with her because I just had this feeling of someone following me all night. This is not to say that it was always a good thing to be in the line of sight. Monica was probably staring on as I sat on the table in the basement. Everybody looked when that table became more than one piece and I ended up in the floor next to the remnants.
Monica: They also ensured that we were both in the same car when we went to Dennys after the party. Their hard work and determination paid off when Randy (with a little prodding) asked me to a party at Triangle the next weekend and I accepted (with a little prodding).
Randy: Thanks go to Terry for weilding the cattle prod.
Monica: At this time I was living with my cousin Shirley and that next Friday we arrived at the party togther. Randy was already there and after a few awkward moments we relazed and began to talk.
Randy: The tension would have been a little bit easier to break with a little bit of alcohol, but for the night I was detrmined to stay sober. So I gathered my cowardly lion and went to talk to the wizard (Christy) who actually gave me some ideas for conversation since I didn’t really have any idea what I wanted to say.
Monica: Thats how we spent that rest of the evening, sitting on the back steps, talking, onyl partly aware of the party going on around us.
Randy: We missed Christy getting ripped. And never saw the people smoking weed in the outhouse 20 feet in front of us.
Monica: We left the party to get someething to eat and went to Jerry’s for an ice cream sundae.
Randy: It had been suggested earlier in the evening (while the wizard was sober) that I ask Monica to leave later that night and go get something to eat. It sounded like a good idea to me.
Monica: Randy took me home after that because I hd to work at 9am the next morning. But there was a problem…since I went to the party with Shirley I was planning on leaving with her and didn’t take my keys with me. Shirley wasn’t home yet. So, rather than just sit in his truck and wait, we went ot Meijer’s. We walked through the store and discovered we are both great big kids at heart and spent much of our time playing in the toy department. After a bit Randy again took me home. Shirley had returned and left the door unlocked. Randy came in so we could exchange phone numbers.
Randy: I find out later that she still wasn’t too sure about me, and decided giving a home phone number might be just a little to dangerous. So she gave me her cell phone number…so she could ignore me in relative peace. Thankfully that didn’t happen and I soon got her real home number.
Monica: We wound up sitting in the living room talking until five in the morning when I finally pushed him out the door. I didn’t want it to end, but I had to get some sleep.
Randy: I later contended that if she had been more forceful and thrown me out I would have let her get some sleep.
Monica: So we began talking on the phone and seeing one another regularly until we had become an exclusive couple without realizing it.
