Expanding Long URLs

Regarding the LifeHacker post on LongURL Expands Short URLs So You Know Where You’re Going:
I appreciate the ability to expand a shortened URL, but I think in the end, they are bad for the internet as a whole. I don’t trust that the sites that are providing them will be around for any length of time, so I’m not planning to store anything sensitive in them.
Is there an open source project available that will allow me to run a similar service on my own web server? It wouldn’t be as short, but it would be something that I could trust to work.
